Representative Sydney Kamlager is running for a second term to represent California's 37th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Kamlager began her political career when Holly Mitchell ran for the California State Assembly in 2010, and Kamlager worked on her campaign. Then she served as Mitchell's District director. In December 2017, State Assemblymember Sebastian Ridley-Thomas resigned from the legislature, and Kamlager won the April 2018 special election to fill out the remainder of his term for the 54th Assembly District. She was re-elected that November and again in 2020. In 2021, Kamlager won a special election for the California State Senate, where she served as the only Black woman in the CA Senate at the time. During her time in the legislature, Kamlager has been a champion for climate action, environmental justice and democracy, earning a 97%lifetime score from California Environmental Voters. She has introduced legislation to center racial justice and equity in California’s climate and environmental policies, including passing a Green New Deal, co-authored a bill to reduce plastic pollution by 75 percent and another to increase usage of refillable beverage bottle systems, to expand urban watershed protections, encourage electric vehicles, expand a regional air quality control board, and got the first hunting ban signed into laws in decades to protect bobcats from trophy hunting. In Congress, Kamlager will continue to be a champion of environmental justice policies and fight for climate smart solutions. Her strong environmental record has earned her a 100% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
