Candidate Background

Representative Scott Peters is running for his seventh term representing California’s 50th Congressional District. Peters has quickly emerged as leader on climate change in Congress. He has introduced legislation that would reduce emissions of climate pollutants such as methane and black carbon, provide funding for climate adaptation planning, and he has supported the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean Power Plan. Peters has also fought against attacks on the Superfund program in order to ensure that polluters are held financially accountable for spills. He is a member of the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change, the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition and the Safe Climate Caucus. Prior to being elected in 2012, Peters worked at the EPA as an economist, started a law practice focused on environmental law, and served as San Diego’s first City Council President and as a member of the California Coastal Commission. He urged the adoption of a Sea Level Rise Adaptation Strategy in San Diego and approved San Diego’s Sustainable Community Program and the Climate Protection Action Plan. While in Congress, he has been the lead or co lead sponsor on the three major climate bills that have become law since he came to congress: bills to control methane leaks, to invest in carbon capture research and deployment, and to eliminate hydrofluorocarbons as coolants which are a significant cause of global warming. He has earned an impressive 95% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard
