WHY THIS RACE MATTERS

  • Youngest Member of Congress from California
  • Holding this seat in California will help win a pro-environmental majority in the House, making it easier to pass climate legislation at the federal level

Candidate Background

Sara Jacobs is running for her third term representing California's 51st Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to serving in the U.S. House, Jacobs held positions in the U.S. State Department during the Obama administration, at UNICEF, the United Nations and as a Scholar in Residence at the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies at the University of San Diego. She was a policy advisor on Secretary Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign. In Congress, she will fight to achieve a 100% clean energy economy by 2030, to uphold our environmental laws and to build back in ways that address climate change and create a more sustainable, just economy. Jacobs will continue to fight in Congress to maintain, establish, and fully enforce environmental regulations that protect our ecosystems, natural resources, and public health. She champions that many of these laws control exposure to pollutants that disproportionately impact low-income individuals, families, and communities of color and that we need to do far more for communities most impacted by the effects of climate change right now, which are often the communities that are most vulnerable for other reasons too. Jacobs will hold corporate polluters that are poisoning our communities accountable and fight against offshore drilling. She will also fight for the federal government to uphold our commitments to the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Representative Jacobs has earned an outstanding 99% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard
