Candidate Background
Representative Nanette Barragán is running for her fifth term representing California’s 44th Congressional District. She was the first Latina elected to the Hermosa Beach City Council and to represent California’s 44th congressional district. As a City Councilwoman, Barragán actively worked to safeguard the air we breathe and the water we drink. She has stood up to Big Oil by opposing oil drilling off Hermosa Beach, and helped successfully lead an effort to defeat a ballot measure to drill in the Santa Monica Bay. In recognition of her work, Barragán received a 2015 Political Leadership Award from the Sierra Club. Barragán has also worked hard to ban plastic bags, which have many negative environmental impacts including threats to marine wildlife. In Congress, Barragán will continue to be a leader on environmental issues, including critical environmental justice issues that are particularly important for the communities of the 44th District, which are among the most at-risk for pollution in the state. Barragán strongly supports the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which helps to fund National Parks, urban parks, ball fields and open spaces treasured by the 44th District. She also led congressional letters to urge the Biden administration to finalize the strongest regulations possible for zero-emission trucks, clean ships, methane emissions, energy efficiency, and more. Representative Barragán has earned an outstanding lifetime score of 98% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
