CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Michael Bennet has represented Colorado in the U.S. Senate since 2009. He previously served as the superintendent of Denver Public Schools, chief of staff to then-Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Managing Director for the Anschutz Investment Company. In the 116th Congress, he served as the top Democrat on the Finance Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources and Infrastructure and of the Agriculture Subcommittee on Conservation, Forestry and Natural Resources, as well as a member of the Senate Democrats’ Special Committee on the Climate Crisis.

As a Senator, he has fought for policies to address climate change and the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back progress, including helping lead the calls for former EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt’s resignation. He has introduced legislation to rescind Trump’s anti-climate executive orders; standardize how the government evaluates the costs of climate change; to promote clean energy, energy efficiency and carbon capture and storage; and to protect our public lands including the Arctic Refuge. Additionally, Bennet helped secure $4 billion dollars to address the Colorado River Basin drought, and as Chair of the Subcommittee on Conservation, Forestry and Natural Resources he pushed to secure more than $20 billion for conservation measures and $5 billion for our forests to reduce the risk of wildfires. Bennet has a 90% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
