CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Maria Cantwell is currently serving her fourth term to represent Washington in the U.S. Senate. Cantwell previously served in the U.S. House and state House. Cantwell is Chair of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, which oversees climate and environment related issues such as transportation, oceans, fisheries, weather, disasters and science. As the ranking Democrat on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, she was an outspoken advocate for reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, a defender of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and a strong voice for protecting roadless areas in our national forests. Cantwell has fought to preserve Washington’s pristine waters and abundant fisheries and has been a leader in opposing offshore drilling, particularly on the West Coast and in Washington.

Cantwell is also the leading champion on ocean acidification science and has continually worked to protect the health and livelihoods of Washington families and workers by holding polluters accountable for cleanup efforts at ASARCO in Pierce, Everett, Thurston, and King Counties. She has been an advocate for Hanford, ensuring a safe, efficient process for the toxic waste cleanup on the Hanford site, and protecting Hanford workers as they complete the world’s largest environmental cleanup project. In the Senate, Cantwell will continue to lead efforts to grow our clean energy economy and limit the carbon pollution driving climate change. Senator Cantwell has earned a 94% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
