CANDIDATE BACKGROUND
Representative Marcy Kaptur is running for a 22nd term to represent Ohio’s 9th Congressional District. Kaptur previously served on the County Commission and in President Carter’s Administration. She has been a strong advocate for the Great Lakes, supporting a permanent ban on drilling and diversion in the Great Lakes and co-sponsoring legislation to help prevent a potential Asian carp invasion. Kaptur worked with Representative John Dingell in 2003 to pass legislation that successfully expanded the Ottawa and Detroit River International Wildlife Refuges. She has also introduced legislation to create a modern version of the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Kaptur, who is the Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee, is a champion for clean water and clean air and for sustainable agriculture in the U.S. She is a strong advocate for the Great Lakes, supporting a permanent ban on drilling co-sponsoring legislation to help prevent a potential Asian carp invasion. Before the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill when Congress couldn't navigate a response to climate change, Kaptur chaired the Energy and Water Subcommittee and navigated passage and enacted the largest climate change bill in House history. Kaptur has championed the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative and passed legislation to expand the Ottawa and Detroit River International Wildlife Refuges. She has also introduced legislation to create a modern version of the Civilian Conservation Corps and authored the first clean energy subtitle in the Department of Agriculture's budget. Kaptur vows to continue her defense of America's freshwater resources and the nation's leadership in addressing climate change. In Congress, Kaptur will continue to defend and protect the Great Lakes. Representative Kaptur has earned a 100% score on LCV’s 2023 National Environmental Scorecard.
