CANDIDATE BACKGROUND
Maggie Hassan is running for a third term representing New Hampshire in the U.S. Senate. A business attorney and advocate for children with disabilities, Hassan previously served six years in the New Hampshire State Senate, including as President Pro Tempore and Majority Leader, and in 2012 was elected as New Hampshire's Governor. In 2016, she became the second woman to serve as both Governor and U.S. Senator from a state, along with fellow New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen. Throughout her time in public service, Hassan has been a strong advocate for the environment and for climate action. In the Senate, she serves on the Finance Subcommittee on Energy, Natural Resources, and Infrastructure, and has introduced legislation to support the solar industry and help us move towards a clean energy economy. She is a leader in the fight for clean drinking water and against toxic PFAS chemicals, and for conserving New Hampshire's natural resources.
Hassan is going after Big Oil and working to build a clean energy economy. The Inflation Reduction Act includes important measures that she supports to expand the clean energy economy and end our dependence on Big Oil and foreign countries. The bill also includes a bipartisan measure that Senator Hassan pushed for to provide a tax cut to households that make energy efficient home upgrades. She helped negotiate key provisions of the bipartisan infrastructure law that invest in clean energy and support domestic battery energy storage development and deployment — technology that is critical to expand clean energy. Senator Hassan has earned a 98% lifetime score on LCV's National Environmental Scorecard.
