WHY THIS RACE MATTERS

  • Vasquez narrowly won his first election in 2022 by fewer than 1,300 votes, making this one of the most vulnerable seats held by pro-environmental champions in the House this cycle
  • Protecting this House seat in New Mexico will help win a pro-environmental majority in the House, making it easier to pass climate legislation at the federal level

Candidate Background

Representative Gabe Vasquez is running for a second term to represent New Mexico's 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He previously served on the Las Cruces City Council. Vasquez has spent his career in advocacy, especially around conservation, environmental justice and climate action. He is a former staffer for U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) and worked at the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, where he helped draft New Mexico's Outdoor Equity Fund legislation, which was the first of its kind in the nation.

Vasquez is also the founder of the Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project. On the city council, among many other efforts, he championed the city's first sustainable streetscape redevelopment project called the Nevada Neighborhood Cooling Corridor. In Congress, Vasquez has worked to protect New Mexico's public lands and rivers, like the Gila river in Southern New Mexico.

He introduced the Community Facilities Program for Rural Clean School Bus Infrastructure Act to expand clean school bus charging infrastructure. Vasquez also has partnered with local tribal leaders to protect the Otero mesa, one of the largest remaining Chihuahuan Desert grasslands.

He will continue fighting to bring renewable energy jobs to Southern New Mexico, reduce pollution and protect our public lands. Representative Vasquez has earned a lifetime score of 92% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard
