CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Representative Hillary Scholten is running for a second term to represent Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District. Scholten was born and raised in western Michigan. After receiving her degree in social work, she worked for the Aids Action Committee and the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. Scholten then graduated from law school, clerked for the immigration unit of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and then the U.S. Department of Justice during the Obama administration. She and her family moved back to Grand Rapids where she worked at the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center as an attorney and provided volunteer legal advice for the Times Up Legal Defense Fund. A member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, she is eager to help Michigan become a leader in Electric Vehicle production and EV charging infrastructure. Most recently, Scholten helped secure a $5 million dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to cultivate urban green spaces and parks in her district. Scholten is running for Congress to protect Michigan's Great Lakes, protect drinking water from PFAS, advance sustainable agriculture, and build our clean energy future. Representative Scholten has earned a 97% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard
